Hi again, dear readers. I am greeting you after a long hiatus in my writing, in relation with my work, the caring after my baby boy and my health. Anyway, I am back again and today I will be writing further about  ASME IX, for you to better understand WPSs and PQRs. Remember, my post are oriented for the people that will take the API 653 certification exam. (more…)

Last time we saw the basics of shell calculations for reconstructed tanks. Today we will make some practice exercises on determining thicknesses for reconstructed tanks

The book of knowledge says this about reconstructed tanks:

The inspector should be able to determine the minimum thickness of the shell of a reconstructed tank. The inspector should be able to:

c) Calculate “td”, design shell thickness (API-650, 5.6.3.2, for tanks of 200 foot diameter and smaller)

d) Calculate “tt”, hydrostatic test shell thickness (API-650, 5.6.3.2)

We have seen an advance to this issue in the article we had on calculating joint efficiencies, but we will have a further look to the formulas that appear there. (more…)

Today Apiexam is receiving  requests for a simulator of the API 653 exam. It was designed by me and built by Bareta. It features 48 API 653 questions in a multiple choice question format.

It runs on Windows Vista, 2008, 7, 8 and 2012. It should be preferablly used in operative systems of 64bits, although it can work in 32bits environments.

This software mimics the experience you will have in the real exam, which I think is the most important use of the software at this stage in your study: getting familiar with the computer based testing environment. The software will show you a simplified tutorial screen in the likes of the actual tutorial (the real one has several pages, while this has only one). You can mark the questions where you have any doubt for later review. if you notice you have problems with any specific question, go open your book and answer it, and put that question into your flashcard software.

It has only 50 questions in multiple choice format, because it is a beta version. It will have an upgrade the fastest possible to the most possible quantity of questions. Remember I have by now created 240 questions from the subjects in the BOK. To receive your copy, write your mail to me and I well send it to you in the span of 1-2 business days. If you write your mail in the form below, you will not receive any more mails regarding any other subject. I won´t collect any personal data.

Be aware that this form will work like a subscribing list, so you will have to confirm by entering to your mail account. (I haven´t mastered in internet skills yet) But it will only be used once for the software.

UPDATE 05/30/2015: The box above no longer works. I am posting the software for free for anyone interested in the following page. Given that this request worked as a mail list, it meant that I had to manually send copies to all of the people that asked for this software. But as the number of askers grew, I found it increasingly difficult to do this. Since that model didn´t work out well, I have to eliminate this mail list and stick to one and only “articles mail list”. If you want to receive articles from Apiexam.com, please go to apiexam.com and give your mail at the bottom of any article.

These are 2 screen captures of the software.

In the actual exam, API is the sponsor, which has invested other enterprise with the task of administering the exam. This other enterprise will have then facilities and expert personnel to watch over the test. Be ready to be frisked, at least visually, as you are not permitted to ingress foods, pens or electronic equipment (only eyeglasses are allowed). The test lasts 4 hours, which is much more of the time you actually need if you study enough. They will let you go to the bathroom or let you go retrieve your cellphone, but they may be overseeing your call.

Lastly, I would like you to consider an option. I am for the first time using a mail list subscription form. If you would like to receive weekly updates of the articles I write here in APIEXAM, you can type your mail next.  I promise to never sell or giveaway your email address to anyone – and you are allowed to unsubscribe at anytime

Here at Apiexam.com, we continue with the explanation of concepts neccessary for passing the API 653 exam. One of the topics you should study in order to pass is calculation of joint efficiencies for shell joints. (more…)

One of the things about API 653 certification is that doesn´t ensure that you are competent in tank inspection. You can pass the exam, and still you don´t always know or remember all you studied in the course, especially if not practiced on a daily basis. One of those things to remember is tank internal inspection interval calculation .

I was wandering the eng-tips forum the other day and I found a question about calculating minimum remaining thickness for a tank bottom.  I saw that forum and decided to write this post in order to clarify the subject more. Besides, this is part of the Body Of Knowledge of the examination, and you know you have to get it right… (more…)

Good morning to all of you.

I am bringing you the third set of 50 questions to study in order to pass the API 653 examination. With these we reach 150 questions and on the way to reach many more. This questions deal with sections 4 to 9 in the API 653 standard.

You know what I did realize? That back then when I was studying for my exam, I didn´t learn all the treats needed to be a successful inspector. But now, the question extracting process has made me aware of a lot more things you should know. I hope you can do the same systematic proccess in your study.

The objective of this website is to give you the most comprehensive guide ever about tank repair, construction and the API examinations so you should pass your own exams. There is a long way to go. Gulp.

You cand download all questions 101th to 150th from Path #3 here in pdf format. If you have some question, please feel free to write it in the comment section.
